Frequently asked questions

How do I track a trip?

Tap Start driving. DayHatch counts your miles by GPS while you drive, and the trip saves itself when you park. You can also end it yourself, or add miles by hand.

Does it keep tracking if I switch apps?

Yes. During a trip DayHatch keeps recording with another app on screen; on Android it does so under a visible notification, and the floating trip button lets you control the trip without switching back.

Do I need an account?

No. There’s no sign-up, email or password. Your records are stored on your phone.

How do I back up?

In Settings you can save a backup to a file, or back up once a day to your own Google Drive. You can switch it off any time. A Drive backup restores on any Android phone.

What’s the daily goal?

An amount you want to keep each day, after expenses. The sunrise arc on Today fills as you earn, so you know when to call it a day. It’s optional.

What is the odometer in Garage for?

A dated photo, or a typed reading, on January 1 and December 31 gives your total miles for the year and your business-use percentage, which backs up your deduction.

How is the tax estimate worked out?

From your profit (earnings minus your mileage deduction and expenses): self-employment tax (15.3% on 92.35% of profit), federal income tax after half of that and the standard deduction, and the state rate you pick. It’s an estimate, not tax advice.

Which mileage rate does it use?

The IRS standard mileage rate in force on the day of each trip. For 2026 that’s 72.5¢ through June 30 and 76¢ from July 1.

Can I bring records from another app?

Yes. Import a CSV with columns in any order: date, amount, hours, trips and notes. You check how it will be read before anything is saved.

What does Pro add, and how do I cancel?

Auto-start, the receipt scanner, recurring expenses, PDF reports and Trends, for $4.99/month or $29.99/year. It’s billed and cancelled in the store you subscribe in: in Google Play under Payments & subscriptions.

Does DayHatch do my taxes?

No. DayHatch is not a tax preparer and doesn’t file your return. Its figures are estimates; check them with a professional.

Wasn’t this called TripTally?

Yes. DayHatch is the new name for TripTally.
